Bay Area Houston Ballet & Theatre Mission & Outreach

Bay Area Houston Ballet & Theatre strives to enhance cultural awareness through performing arts and develop aspiring performers with diversified performing skills, as well as stimulate public participation and regional involvement

A variety of programs have been developed over the years to enhance the community’s awareness of cultural arts through performing arts.

• Elementary school students learn about ballet in a hands-on environment with backstage tours and the school performance program. One third of BAHBT’s performances are directed to school age children at reduced rates. Seniors also have access to reduced ticket prices at times that make attendance convenient.

• BAHBT regularly performs “we come to you” vignettes for such organizations as the Ronald McDonald House and UTMB-Galveston, civic events, including the Space Center Ballunar Festival, Seabrook Music Festival, League City Village Fair, and for children’s enrichment programs at Barnes & Noble Booksellers and local libraries.

• Over the past 10 years, BAHBT has also brought guest artists from around the world to our community by presenting productions such as the Ballet Stars of Moscow, the Saint Petersburg Ballet of Russia, and the Stars of the American Ballet.

Meet the Artistic Staff & Dancers

Aspiring young artists from our area have the opportunity to study with masters such as Timour Bourtasenkov, Olga Kostritzky, Dorio Perez, Janie Parker, Alex Hasbany, and Amelie Hunter and perform on stage with leading guest artists from across the nation. BAHBT’s sponsorship of the Scholarship Program extends the horizon for dancers pursuing their goals to the nation’s dance capital of New York City. Through the Scholarship Program, Company dancers have trained with the Joffrey Training Program, American Ballet Theatre, School of American Ballet, Broadway Dance Center, and Alvin Ailey. BAHBT continues to host summer intensive programs in ballet, contemporary dance styles and musical theatre.

BAHBT strives to be a destination for artists and audiences seeking a highly unique and evolutionary performance experience which combines the rich heritage of the classics with the excitement and limitless possibilities of contemporary dance, theatre, and performance art.

As with other major ballet companies nationwide, BAHBT is the outgrowth of a dance academy, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (RAFA). Founded in 1976 by Volunteer Artistic Director Lynette Mason Gregg, BAHBT began performing and developing community awareness.

Its first full-length production, The Nutcracker, followed in just 3 years, with guest artists and sets comparable to professional companies. Over the past 31 years, the Company has increased its performances and events, and the quality of its performers has matured to professional caliber.

In addition to The Nutcracker, one of five major classical ballets is performed each year: Giselle, Coppelia, Cinderella, The Sleeping Beauty, and Swan Lake. In 1998, BAHBT added the production Dracula to its repertoire, as well as The Contemporary Series, which showcases a modern, ballet, jazz, and tap repertoire.

BAHBT’s expansion into contemporary dance is projecting the Company and its audiences into diverse dance styles choreographed by nationally acclaimed choreographers such as Amber Thornton, Amelie Hunter, Joe Istre, Alex Hasbany, Alex and Victoria Arzipe, and Daniel Catanac. BAHBT continues to promote diverse performing arts disciplines through the RAFA programs.
